Join us in shaping the next generation of volunteer technicians across the UK
Trainers
Most volunteers in Houses of Worship and community arts venues are self-taught — learning through trial and error, YouTube videos, or occasional advice from others. But without structure or guidance, even the most committed volunteers are left guessing.
Are you an experienced technician, educator, or industry professional?

Our Core Values
- Volunteer technicians matter — they are the backbone of worship and community venues across the UK.
- Every professional started as a volunteer — passion, not pay, is where excellence begins.
- Confidence comes from clarity — you perform best when you understand both what you’re doing and why.
- Growth is always possible — no matter your experience, there’s always room to improve.
- Learning transforms practice — you get better by learning, then applying what you’ve learned in real-world settings.
Our Core Values
- Volunteers technicians matter
- All AV professionals started as passionate volunteers
- You can only perform well when you clearly know what you are doing and why
- You can always get better at what you do
- You get better through learning and applying it
What is the AWVT’s Initial Vision?
For most volunteer technicians, learning is a patchwork experience — made up of hearsay, YouTube videos, and trial-and-error. It can feel like playing pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey: you hope someone nearby has already made the mistake you’re about to make — and can warn you before it happens.
If you have the money, you might attend the occasional AV convention or training day and pick up a few tips. But even then, it’s a lottery.
AWVT exists to change that.
When you become part of the AWVT, you’re no longer figuring it out alone. You become part of a tribe — a national community of technicians who share your passion, speak your language, and support your growth.
You’ll gain access to a structured curriculum that shows you exactly what to learn — and why. You’ll be connected to tutors who can help you refine your craft, step-by-step. And when you demonstrate recognised levels of skill and understanding, you’ll receive certification — not just a piece of paper, but real peer recognition for what you’ve achieved.
That confidence — knowing you’ve got it right and can do it again — replaces the fear of getting it wrong. It’s the difference between panic and purpose. It’s when being a technician becomes fun again.
⸻
AWVT is building this framework across eight core disciplines:
• Stagecraft
• Audio
• Projection
• Lighting
• Video
• Broadcasting
• ICT
• Technical Team Management
Technicians can start with the basics, gain confidence, and move on to more advanced topics at their own pace. Some may specialise in one area; others may choose to become competent across several. Either way, they grow — and they grow together.
Because this isn’t just about training. It’s about belonging.
It’s about excellence through community.
It’s about raising the standard — together.
